Hosted by the Iranian and Persian Gulf Studies Program at Oklahoma State University, African Presence in Iranian Societies and Cultures is an interdisciplinary platform and international hub for the emergent field of Afro-Iranian studies. Slavery and the forced migration of African labour to Iran dates back to the third century and lasted until 1928, when the Majlis (parliament) abolished slavery and declared any slave entering the country emancipated. This long period and its aftermath constitute a significant but unexplored gap in the historiography, literary and cultural studies of Iran and the broader region. The aim of this online venue is to gather together scholars and researchers, (visual) artists and filmmakers from Iran and across the world who have studied or seek to explore the historical, societal, literary, and cultural aspects of the African presence since the era of slavery in the Muslim world to the contemporary settlement of Afro-Iranian communities in southern Iran. We hope to launch this platform to announce new and recent publications on the topic, share news of evolving projects in academe and the media, and update affiliates and colleagues on relevant upcoming events at Oklahoma State University, as well as the international conferences and workshops that will be regularly organized in Iran.
